Fitness and MovementWhether you’re 20, 40, 60 or 80 years old, fitness is an important part of life. While it may seem more important at certain times of life, it remains an integral part of our daily life. When we are fit and healthy, we face life and its challenges and lessons with enthusiasm. When we are tired, weak, and unhealthy, life can sometimes seem to be “too much” to handle. There are levels of fitness, just as there are various levels of interest in fitness. For some, walking is the exercise of choice. For others, a more strenuous workout is enjoyed. Whatever your level of health or fitness, the exercise you choose must resonate with your interests. If you are an outdoors type, then bicycling, hiking, kayaking, may be your preference. If you prefer air conditioned environments, then fitness centers and indoor exercise such as weight lifting would have more appeal to you. Whichever you pick, it should be fun. If it is not fun, you can then pick something else, or examine your attitudes and see if the problem lies in your mind and old habits. It can be difficult to go from a complete stop to becoming an active dynamic person, full of energy and zest for life. If you have not exercised for years (or decades), remember to work into a program slowly. There are professionals who can help you build a program suited to your muscle tone and capabilities. There are also books and videos that can assist you in creating a routine for your specific needs. Many centers offer a “sample” or introductory class, where you can either participate or sit on the sidelines and “get a feel” for the type of exercise offered. Some forms of exercise, such as yoga, tai chi, etc., incorporate a meditative practice. Some forms are more dynamic: aerobics, gymnastics, etc. Whichever appeals to you, and suits your fitness level, is probably the one to go for. Fitness of body leads to fitness of mind, and “fitness of soul”. All three are interrelated, and negating one over the other leads to imbalance. We are spiritual beings in a physical body - let’s remember to take care of our body as well as our mind and soul. |
