History

Florida has always been a place of big dreams -- starting with the Spanish establishing St. Augustine, the oldest city in North America, followed by railroad owner Henry Flagler, Julia Tuttle in Miami, Carl Fisher in Palm Beach, George Merrick in Coral Gables, and Fort Lauderdale’s Frank Stranahan. And one must mention Walt Disney who came specifically to the Orlando area in Central Florida but whose influence has been felt throughout the entire state.

The history of man in Florida is a bit peculiar. On the one hand, it is one of the youngest inhabited areas of North America due to its distance from the land bridge between Asia and Alaska. On the other hand, it is the oldest European inhabited land in the “New World”. But modern Florida, except for its natural history, owes little to its ancient past. This fact is attributable to the demise of its original inhabitants and to the general inhospitableness of the land.
