Home and Business

While for many years business was “divorced” from personal life, we have come to see that we cannot cut ourselves in two... practicing one set of ethics at home, and another at work. We now realize that we can not destroy the environment and our fellow human beings by day, and expect to sleep soundly at night. Many have become torn by “doing their job” without questioning the morals and ethics of what they were doing.

Ethical and socially conscious investing has come of age. Parents in the workplace experience the need to be able to be proud of what they do to “earn a living”. Young adults launch out into careers (or more seasoned adults change careers) with more than the bottom line in mind. Salary and possibility of advancement and security are losing importance to quality of life and personal interest and satisfaction in a career or job.

Our homes are no longer a sanctuary from “the outside world”. Television brings business, politics, and violence right into our living rooms. Overworked executives bring work home, housewives also work outside the home to extend the income of the household, and children often start earning money at an early age through paper routes, babysitting, etc..

This chapter focuses on those aspects of our life that are encompassed in both our home and work environment. As in all areas of our lives, we have choices. We can choose services which are environmentally friendly, humane, and harmonious to ourselves and the world around us. We can choose to do business with people that we know subscribe to those same principles - fairness, integrity, and respect for all life.

Our home is our castle, yet our workplace is also an extension of our living space. We can create a peaceful healing environment everywhere we are by making the appropriate choices, and keeping our focus on harmony, peace, and well-being.
