Recreation

Whether we choose our recreational activities because of their fitness appeal, or their pleasure aspect, there is no denying that recreation is very beneficial to us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The 20th century found us working more and having less and less time for “personal leisure” — hopefully the 21st century is where we’ll learn the art of balance. Learning to balance our time for work and need for play, “busy-ness” and “being-ness”, outer-directed activities and inner-directed time. Taking time to play, to enjoy life, to enjoy being with friends and family, all this is essential to our physical and mental health, as well as our emotional and spiritual well-being.

South Florida is a great place to “recreate” ourselves. The ocean offers many avenues... kayaking, swimming, sailing, walking on the beach, and more. Whether the sun is shining or hiding behind clouds, it is never too cold to go “out and play”. For those of us raised in Northern climes, this is indeed a pleasure and a blessing.

The Keys with its many islands and keys offers populated recreational sites, as well as “deserted” islands that can be accessed by sail, kayak, or canoe. The Everglades also offers a draw for outdoors activities. Camping is available either on “organized sites” (see our Retreats and Lodging chapter), or you can go “primitive” and camp on small islands with no facilities, no amenities, except the beauty of nature and the quiet of seclusion. The choice is there for each and everyone of us.

Don’t own a sailboat? No problem, rent one for an hour, or a day, or more. Don’t own a bicycle... same solution. The only limitation is your own desire and commitment... Too often we have put off “enjoying life” till “tomorrow”... but then tomorrow seems to keep getting away from us.

Take time to play, take time to simply “be”. Carpe diem - seize the day!
