Whether you are visiting South Florida, or you’re a “local” planning a vacation in the Keys, or you just need to “get away”, you need a place to stay. I remember years ago, realizing that I needed a “weekend vacation”, I took myself to Key Biscayne for a weekend, luxuriating in the hotel’s day spa, with sauna, massage, steam room, and beaches. It was only 15 minutes from home, but seemed like a million miles away.

So when you need a retreat, there are different choices open to you. Bed and breakfasts usually offer a more personal locale where you can converse with the owners of the house, or with other visitors over morning juice and pastries. Campgrounds bring you closer to earth and Mother Nature and still provide hot water and bathroom facilities. Vacation rentals give you your own “home away from home”. Retreat Centers will often provide more than a place to stay... a workshop or massage may be included, or you can plan a group event for friends, co-workers, or family.

So the first step is to clarify what you’re looking for... a place away from it all, or a location that will offer companionship and the opportunity to make new friends. Neither is “right” or “wrong”, just depends on your preference and needs at the moment.

This chapter offers you “simple” choices... We tend to “recommend” places that are closer to Nature and in harmony with their environment. So you won’t find 30 story hotels here... unless of course, they offer a health spa where you can be  nurtured and pampered. You will find youth hostels, campgrounds, bed and breakfasts, retreat centers, vacation rentals, and small inns and hotels.
